Okavango Delta - Big Flooding!
The Okavango Delta in Northern Botswana is flooding and the flow rates continue to rise. A strong annual flood is peaking into a very strong flood.
The annual flooding of the Okavango Delta produces one of the world's great inland waterways. The large wetlands on the edges of the Kalahari Desert are a marvel of nature. The floods start in the highlands of Angola and take from three to six months to reach all areas of the Okavango Delta.
You can visit the
Maun, Botswana Blog for more information on the flood. The Flood Chart shows some of the strongest floods in the last 30 years. The flood started in January at a very high flow rate - in the area of 400 cubic metres per second. Measuring is done at Mohembo Ferry Crossing, outside Shakawe - in the very north of Botswana. Until two weeks ago the high flow rates looked like this years food would be strong. Two weeks age the flood started to peak and flow rates increase by 200 cubes per second. A new flood reading is due out next week.
Because the Okavango Delta is so flat, there is the serious possibility of wide spread flooding. Many of the lodges and their airstrips could go under water. Communities and families may have to be evacuated and water treatment plants protected.

Maun Contrasts
There is little doubt that Maun is growing quickly. Commercial and home construction continue to accelerate. Some times it is easy to miss individual failures.
The picture above represents broken dreams. Day by day the termites prosper and often donkeys rest inside - seeking shelter from the sun. The doors are gone and the windows are broken - the initial dream has been overtaken by termite castles.

Wildlife Magic on Safari, Botswana
Trevor Peake Enjoys A Trip To Botswana, Part 1
From the pages of the Liverpool, Daily Post in Trevors own words -
"Hundreds of buffalo leisurely grazing their way across the savannah as dusk fell will be my abiding memory of a few days in the Moremi Game Reserve, part of the vast Okavango Delta, in northern Botswana."
"Our guide Shylock spotted what we thought was just a small group, but after expertly circling round through the bush he found the front of what turned out to be a vast herd of Cape Buffalo. We could only watch in wonder for over half an hour as they strolled by, the odd magnificent bull giving us the once over as we observed them from the safety of our safari truck 30 yards away."
"An hour earlier, we had been even closer to a male lion, which showed the scars of a recent skirmish. Such splendid sights are what makes a safari the magical experience it is.

Tsodilo Hills - Rediscovered
Major new insights, gained from recent discoveries at the Tsodilo Hills, are creating excitement around the world. The Tsodilo Hills are about 300km north of Maun, Botswana and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site 3 or 4 years ago. Camping is possible at the site and a museum already exists. It is expected that more safari trips will be taking interested and informed visitors to the hills. Along with the thousands of wall paintings that we knew existed, artifacts over 70,000 years old, that were used in ritual activities, have been found. The headlines are all about the Python Shrine that has been found. Everybody can start to put together their own theories and wait for the researchers to complete the whole story.
