Calendar: Google has a 'no intermediaries' principle and Wik

2008-04-08
Google has a 'no intermediaries' principle and Wikipedia is
anti-expert.
What is the librarians' viewpoint?

Date: Tuesday 8 April 2008
Time: 6.30pm
Venue: The Sekforde Arms, Sekforde Street, London EC1
Map: http://digbig.com/3pmf
Speaker: John Dove, Credo Reference

While wikis, blogs and search engines are fast becoming the
preferred ways
to find information, every professional is familiar with the
reliability and
relevance issues they raise.

As an alternative, libraries are increasingly using
reference-book aggregators to provide networked access to
established reference titles. But how can librarians' recommended
sources be made visible to their users? Can well-designed online
reference tools bring web users into the library?
John will discuss the issues involved and look at how
reference/information services can take advantage of the latest
resources.

John Dove is CEO of Credo Reference, a UK company previously
known as Xrefer Ltd. John has been working in the online
information industry for 40 years - for financial services,
education, and libraries. He was President and CEO of
SilverPlatter.

This talk will be of particular value to anyone registered
for CILIP Chartership and can contribute towards CPD requirements.

CILIP in London evening meetings are free and open to all
with a professional interest in the topic. Refreshments will be
available afterwards. As space is limited, please let us know if
you are coming: contact Phillip Powell at

you found out about the event.

advertised, but regret we cannot take responsibility for changes or

Blog: Opportunity for funding: a professional visit...

...to a new EU country

Cilip in London is, once again, inviting members to apply
for its annual international
travel bursary. This year the, £600,
bursary is available to a branch member to help
finance a visit to one of the new EU countries.

The successful applicant will be expected to write a report
of about 1000 words on the
visit. Previous recipients of the bursary were Caroline
Jago, University of the Arts in
London, who visited Latvia to discuss developments in LIS
since 1991 and, in 2007,
Renae Satterley, Rare Books Librarian, Middle Temple Library
visited Poland to discuss
rare book collections. Reports on these visits are available
on the branch website.

Applicants, who must be members of the Branch, are asked to
provide the following
information:
- A short CV
- Country to be visited and why
- Specific topics you wish to discuss with colleagues in the
country rather
than types of LIS to visit
- Any foreign language ability
- When you wish to travel
- Any contacts you have in the country you wish to visit

Please contact Edward Dudley (dudl@btinternet.com - 020 7628
3523) for more
information or to apply. Closing date is 31 May 2007.

Please visit the CILIP in London website:
http://www.cilip.org.uk/branches/byregion/london/activities/Londonbursary.htm
for
further information.

CILIP in London's international work also includes a bursary
for a colleague from one
of the new EU countries to visit London. In 2006 the Branch
awarded a bursary to a
Czech librarian to visit London, in 2007 to a Hungarian
librarian and a Lithuanian
librarian will be the recipient of the bursary in 2008.
Small grants are also available to
help our Branch members attend international conferences and
courses at home or
abroad.

Blog: Purpose of this site

It is hoped this site can be used by
the many information sector organisations which operate in London
to help avoid clashes in organising events.

Potentially this site has many more
advantages, including:

the ability for groups' members
to subscribe to events and news via RSS

a media gallery: groups can add
content such as photographs of committee members and event
    organisers

If you would like to contribute
please email CILIPinLondon@gmail.com for a user login.

career.
Oxfordshire. She now
Speaker: Helen Nicol
With more and more businesses using Web 2.0 technologies for
knowledge
sharing and information management, skills that were
previously the sole
preserve of the librarian or information manager are becoming
a necessity
for staff in a wide variety of roles. This is not a
threat to information
professionals, but a chance for them to demonstrate the value
of their
knowledge.

Information skills are highly transferable. Helen is
convinced that
librarians' skills are paramount to the success of Web 2.0
and will look at
how information professionals can use their skill sets for
the benefit of
their organisations.

Helen Nicol is a Capacity and Capability Programme Manager at
NHS Connecting
for Health. She has a keen interest in learning and knowledge

Many people only think about their career at transition
points, when they are starting out or when they need to move jobs.
However, to be successful in today's rapidly changing employment
market you need to be constantly aware of opportunities to develop
and manage your career. It is not necessarily about changing jobs,
but about making the most of the job you are in. Our speakers,
Francis Muzzu and David Winter, will look at how to make
yourself as employable as possible, how
to take more control over how your career develops, and how
to use networking to increase your awareness of opportunities and
to raise your profile.

David Winter has been a
Career Consultant with The Careers Group, University of London, for
over 13 years. He advises recent graduates and established
professionals, helping them to achieve more successful and
satisfying careers.

Francis Muzzu is Manager of
Infomatch, the CILIP recruitment agency, which recruits for
information roles across all sectors . He has ten years' experience
of information recruitment, and is also a qualified information
professional with experience of working for both information users

author of many articles for the information press as well as a

Calendar: From Beleek to Lowestoft - a journey through the..

2007-11-14
...UK's libraries OR Long Overdue
Organising body: CILIP in London

Time: 6.30 pm
Venue: The Sekforde Arms, Sekforde Street, London EC1
Map: http://digbig.com/3pmf
Speaker: Tom Palmer

Tom will talk about his work in progress, Long Overdue, a
travelogue of the UK libraries, where he meets library users and
workers. From a mobile that visits farms close to the West coast of
Ireland to Lowestoft's flat land and rising issues, Tom has
travelled the UK to find out if libraries are changing people's
lives like they changed his.

Tom Palmer has worked for libraries - beginning in Bradford
- for ten years. He is currently employed by the Reading Agency and
the National Literacy Trust on the Reading Partners project and the
Premier League Reading Stars scheme respectively. Tom is the author
of several books. His next - a 10+ football thriller - is called
The Football Detective and will be published in May 2008 by Puffin.

CILIP in London evening meetings are free and open to all
with a professional interest in the topic. Refreshments will be
available afterwards. As space is limited, please let us know if
you are coming. It would be helpful to tell us how you found out
about the event. Contact Phillip Powell at

Calendar: Members' Day Talk and Reception

2007-10-19
Organising body: CILIP in London

Venue: Brunei Gallery at SOAS
Speaker: Lady Antonia Fraser

For the third year running, CILIP in London is hosting a talk
and reception at Members' Day on 18 October 2006.

The talk will focus on Antonia Fraser's most recent book,
Love and Louis XIV: The Women in the Life of the Sun King. Lady
Antonia is noted for the depth of her background research, so this
will be an excellent chance to discover how an author uses
information resources. Afterwards there will be an opportunity for
questions and discussion. Signed copies of Love and Louis XIV will
be available at a special price.

Antonia Fraser is the author of many widely-acclaimed
historical works and biographies. She has also written four highly
praised books focusing on women in history - most recently
Marie-Antoinette: A Journey, which was filmed by Sofia Coppola.
Antonia Fraser was made CBE in 1999, and awarded the Norton
Medlicott Medal by the Historical Association in 2000.

The talk begins at 18.00 in the Brunei Gallery at SOAS. It
will be followed by a reception at 19.00. The reception has been
made possible through the generous sponsorship of Swets UK and with
financial support from CILIP in London.

Tickets can be purchased upon registration and cost ??10 inc
VAT. A limited number of tickets are available so delegates will be
booked in on a first come first served basis.
