Applications for the Student Employmentand Experience Development Program (SEED) are nowavailable in the guidance office. Applicants must be currently enrolled inschool and be attending a post-secondary institution in the fall. In theapplication, students will be asked to identify their skills, education, and location and based on such information, their names will be sentto appropriate employers (e.g., provincial government departments, non-profitorganizations, municipalities).
Message for students in grade ten, eleven, andtwelve:
Beginning on the first day of second semester, January 30,2008, the guidance department will be implementing a new procedure for studentsrequesting course changes. Only those students who are either new to ourschool or have no scheduled course will be seen immediately. All otherstudents who are requesting a course change for whatever reason, includinghaving failed the prerequisite, taken the course before, or a mix-up in thestudent’s timetable, will be required to complete a course changeform. These forms can be found at the main counter of the school’soffice. When filling out the form, the student will state the reason forthe change, as well as the course that he/she wants to switch to. Onceforms are completed, guidance counsellors will sort the requests in order ofpriority, and then call students from their currently scheduled classes. All students are asked to remain in their currently scheduled classesregardless of the change required. This new process is being implementedin the hopes of avoiding long line ups in the guidance area on the first fewdays of classes, and to avoid students wanting to make a change that may beinappropriate.
Because many of our classes for second semester arecurrently full and because students have had all semester to make changes totheir timetable, we encourage all students to only request appropriate coursechanges..
I sent the voice mail but was ill on Friday andwas not available to post this.
ELPA Voicemail – January 17,2008
The READING portion of the provincial English Language Proficiency Assessment willbe written on Monday afternoon - January 21,by grade 9 students and those in grades 10, 11, and 12 who have not yet writtenor passed this part of the assessment.
(The WRITING portion will be written during the first week of April.)
Students who are scheduled to do the READING assessment have beeninstructed to report to their assigned room on Monday at 12:50 with severalHB or #2 pencils, a ruler orstraight edge to help them follow the answer key, and a dictionary because we do not have enoughfor everyone.
Students are not permitted to leave the assessment room to go home untilat least 2:30 and are encouragedto stay longer. Buses will be available to take students home at the regulartime after school, but we are asking that parents have a back-up plan for studentsto get home on Monday in case more time is needed to be successful on thisgraduation requirement.
The cafeteria will be open on Monday from 11:30 until 12:30 if students wish to buy lunch. It will notbe open at noon for the rest of the week.
We hope that students will use the time between the Monday morning examand the afternoon assessment to rest. We also hope that they get a goodnight’s sleep on Sunday and arrive with a positive attitude. Thank youfor all that you can do to make this a positive and successful experience.
